NOTE:

* The NOVICE Section is for those players who do not have a USCF membership or who have never had a USCF membership.  This section is for beginner players who have never played in a rated tournament before, and this Section does not require a membership.  If you would like your child to play in a USCF-Rated section and receive a national rating after this tournament, please purchase a one-year USCF membership for your child and he/she will be placed in the U500 section (which also plays on Saturday, Dec. 8).

For USCF membership rates please scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page and you can simply click on the correct age category to purchase a new membership or to renew a membership, or if you need help in obtaining one for your child, please call us with a credit card at 504-208-9596 and we will assist you (our service is free - you pay for the membership only).

If you do decide to purchase a membership for your child prior to this tournament or on site, he/she will be placed in the U500 section, which is for beginner players who have memberships and are working on their USCF ratings with each rated tournament they attend. After playing these 4 games, your child will receive a national USCF rating which you will be able to follow on line so that you will be able to see the progress of his chess rating with each USCF-rated tournament played and he/she will no longer be an "Unrated or Novice" player again in future tournaments.

 FORMAT

NOVICE SECTION (Unrated) - 4SS, G/20 d0

Novice section plays 4 games against each opponent and each player will have 20 minutes to complete his/her part of the game.  Novice players do not have to play with clocks unless both players know how to use a clock, are comfortable playing with a clock, and both agree to use a clock.  The Swiss-System computer pairing program will be used to run the tournament.

ALL OTHER SECTIONS - 4SS, G/30, d5

(4 Swiss-System, Game in 30 minutes for each opponent with a 5-second clock delay)

Four games will be played against each opponent, and each player will have 30 minutes to complete his part of the game. Clocks should be set at 30 minutes each side with a 5-second delay.  The Swiss-System computer pairing program will be used to run the tournament.

PLEASE NOTE

THE NOVICE AND U500 SECTION PLAYERS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PLAY WITH A CLOCK UNLESS BOTH OPPONENTS ARE FAMILIAR WITH USING A CLOCK AND BOTH AGREE TO DO SO.

In ALL sections, USCF playing rules ( i.e., touch-move rule) will be in effect.

For those players who are already members of the USCF and have a rating, you will be able to play 4 rated games in your rating section(s).

 BYES

  • Byes (1/2-pt.) available for any round.
  • Limit: One bye per player.
  • Must notify Tournament Director of a requested Bye prior to the start of the Round 2; after the start of Round 2, bye changes may not be requested.
  • No elimination - everyone will play all scheduled rounds.

You can request a "BYE" when you fill out the on-line registration form . . . please remember that the reason you request a bye is because your child cannot be present for one of the rounds.  This is a voluntary bye that you request in the event, for example, your child will be late and miss the first round (then you should check the box for Bye: Rd. 1), or in case he has to leave the tournament early (then you should check the box for Bye: Rd. 4).  If your child will be present for all 4 rounds, then do not check any "Bye" boxes on the form.  Requesting a "Bye" must be done prior to the beginning of Round 2.  When you request a Bye, it will simply add one-half point to your child's score for that day's event, but will not in any way affect his/her rating.

PRIZES

  • Trophies to the top 5 winners in all sections
  • Medals to all non-trophy winners!
  • Holiday Gifts to all!

All trophy and medal placements will be determined by USCF-recommended computer pairing system tiebreaks.

 ELECTRONIC NOTATION DEVICES

There are four electronic chess notation devices which are approved for and allowed in a USCF-rated tournament:   the Monroi, the e-Notate PDA, Plycount and ChessNoteR. You may use any one of these devices, but the device must remain on top of the table at all times (you may not hold it under the table in your lap or under the tablecloth, and the device cannot leave the tournament hall while your game is still ongoing). The tournament director has the right to request to see your notation device at any time before, during or after your game.

MISCELLANEOUS

Players should bring their own chessboards, pens/pencils if they take notation, chess pieces and clocks, if possible. Basic Chess Supplies (boards, pieces, clocks, notation scorepads and chess pencils) will be available for purchase on site. Only standard regulation chess boards (two color squares only, i.e., black & white, blue & white, green & white, etc.) as well as standard Staunton tournament chess pieces (white and black only) will be allowed in tournament play.  Individual notation score sheets will be provided to those players who wish to take notation.
